Harm reduction

As a Los Angeles city-certified syringe services program and public health provider in Skid Row, Blue Hollywood is actively responding to the overdose crisis through urgent, life-saving interventions.

We believe that drug use should not be criminalized and that the most effective way to support healthy and fulfilling lives is to meet people where they are in the moment, navigate challenges in community and provide the necessary tools to keep individuals save as they do.

We provide wound care and harm-reduction supplies —such as syringes, naloxone, and safer-smoking kits — around the clock at the Sanctuary, and through weekly outreach within the extended neighborhood. As an organization that is deeply engrained in the community, our success in saving lives is based on intimate relationships, knowing where people are and when they are in a state of risk.

Our efforts contribute to more than 100 documented overdose reversals per year, many of which are administered by BHSS staff and volunteers. This underscores the critical importance of accessible naloxone and other resources in a zip code where people die of overdose at many times the countywide rate.

Additionally, BHSS acts as a community mediator, regularly intervening in and de-escalating armed, domestic and gang-related disputes.
